Summer blockbusters made a strong showing on the shortlist of visual effects Oscar contenders announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Friday, claiming six of the 10 spots. They are “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” “Maleficent,” “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” and “Godzilla.”
Rounding out the list are the superhero flick “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” the sci-fi drama “Interstellar” and the upcoming movies “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” and “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb.”
Among the movies that didn’t make the cut were biblical epics “Noah” and “Exodus: Gods and Kings,” the wall-crawling sequel “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” and neuro-thriller “Lucy.”
The list was determined by the executive committee of the academy’s visual effects branch. All members of the branch will now be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from the shortlisted films and vote to nominate five for final Oscar consideration.
Nominations will be announced Jan. 15, and the Oscars will be held Feb. 22.
