Boulders block PCH in Dana Point

A long stretch of Pacific Coast Highway in Orange County was closed in both directions Friday morning after two large boulders tumbled onto the road, authorities said.
The boulders, each the size of a “small VW,” fell at about 3:30 a.m. in the area between Camino Capistrano and Dana Point Harbor Drive, blocking northbound and southbound traffic, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
Sheriff’s Lt. Jeff Passalaqua said the roadway likely wouldn’t be clear until at least 7 a.m.
A Sigalert was issued at 5:24 a.m. Officials recommended taking the 5 Freeway north, where traffic was flowing smoothly, as an alternative.
[Update, 8:17 a.m. PST Jan. 10: The Orange County Sheriff’s Department said on its Twitter account that PCH was expected to remain closed in both directions until about noon as crews continue to clean up the rock slide.]
