A man who tried to cross train tracks by crawling underneath a slow-moving freight train was killed early Thursday in downtown San Diego.
The incident occurred after midnight at Market Street and Harbor Drive, according to the County Sheriff’s Department.
Crossing lights and bells were working as the train approached, said Deputy Ed Macken.
The man carried no identification and is believed to have been in his 20s and homeless.
Investigators don’t know why he didn’t wait until the train passed to cross the tracks, but alcohol may have played a role, the Sheriff’s Department said.
