San Diego County deputy shoots La Mesa man during struggle

SAN DIEGO -- A San Diego County sheriff’s deputy shot a 55-year-old La Mesa man who had stabbed another deputy in the leg while resisting arrest, officials said Tuesday.
The La Mesa man, identified as Allan David Riley, was taken to a hospital for treatment and then arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer. Riley had outstanding warrants for burglary and possession of a dagger.
The wounded deputy, whose name was not revealed, was treated and released from the hospital.
The incident occured in La Mesa during a joint effort by the Sheriff’s Department and La Mesa Police Department.
When two deputies sought to question a man at a gas station, he gave a phony name, the Sheriff’s Department said. When a record check revealed his true name and the existence of the warrants, deputies sought to arrest him.
During a struggle, a deputy was stabbed in the leg and his partner fired once at the man, striking him in the stomach, officials said.
