A chromatic controversy

Last year, on Thanksgiving Day, Holly Ellis took a trip up to Santa Barbara, where she framed and captured this photo of the Chromatic Gate.
The public piece of art was designed by Herbert Bayer and recently underwent an extensive restoration, which included a coat of bright paint. Originally intended to be a tribute to the artists of the “unique town,” it garnered mixed reviews from the locals -- some arguing that it disrupted the beauty and fluidity of the shoreline.
The debate, of course, did not phase Ellis. “I love strong structure within an image -- combining the two was too good to pass up,” she said.
The image was taken with an iPhone 5.
