Readers React:  Action on immigration a must for Obama

To the editor: Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah says that Congress is going to stand up to the president and “the American people expect them to do that.” Not all the American people. The Americans who voted for President Obama (twice) expect the president to do the things he promised regarding climate change and immigration reform. It’s time for the president to come out swinging. (“Obama’s Asia tour relaunches his efforts on ‘legacy’ issues,” Nov. 17)

To Republicans, it is scandalous for Obama to take executive action. They have threatened to shut down the government (again); some have raised the possibility of impeachment.

But the president’s impending executive order on immigration is not without precedent. Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush took similar action without a hullabaloo. Why was it OK for them but not this president?

To the editor: Executive actions by the president of the United States should be on relatively minor issues, not on important and controversial issues like immigration that may affect millions of people and where there is wide disagreement.

Therefore, only Congress should make decisions on issues like this, not the president.
