Readers React: ‘Private’ summer school classes prompt debate

To the editor: On the surface, it appears that education foundations provide an unfair advantage to students in affluent areas. However, if you dig deeper into our state’s funding of public schools, you’ll find that districts like those featured in the article have been shortchanged. Simply investigate the per-student funding throughout the state. (Re “Public or private,” July 13)
“Equal protection under the law” does not exist in our state’s funding of public education. I believe the reason has to do with a community’s willingness to raise funds to make up the difference. Rather than mount a legal challenge, the communities have accepted the burden.
Instead of faulting these efforts, we should challenge our elected officials to be equal and fair to all.
