Briefs: Champions crowned at Polar Bear tourney

The ninth annual Christmas “Polar Bear” 4-Person Beach Volleyball Tournament, Potluck and Toy Drive was held Saturday on Main Beach in Laguna Beach. Seventy-five players competed for the Polar Bear title under ideal weather conditions.

Polar Bear Tournament division winners were:

Social Division: Enzo Bakboychuk, Ken Reilly, Dale Phelp, Randy Harris, Landi Morgan.

Open Division: Bobby Jacobs, Becky Dean and Josh Dean (first mother-son Open champion), Adam Lythgoe (repeat Polar Bear champion).

Team USA competes

The USA Water Polo Women’s Senior National Team opened Holiday Cup tournament play Tuesday against Italy and scored a 9-4 victory at Corona del Mar High.

Team USA, which includes Makenzie and Aria Fischer of Laguna Beach, was led in scoring by Maddie Musselman (Corona del Mar High) and Rachel Fattal (Seal Beach, UCLA) who score two goals each.

In an exhibition game Sunday at Mira Costa High in Manhattan Beach, Makenzie Fischer scored once in the opening quarter as Team USA led from start to finish in a 10-8 win over the Netherlands.

The Holiday Cup runs daily through Sunday at Corona del Mar High.

Friday (free admission): Spain vs. Netherlands, 3 p.m.; USA vs. Italy, 7:30 p.m.

Saturday: Spain vs. Italy, noon; USA vs. Netherlands, 1:30 p.m.

Sunday: Netherlands vs. Italy, 9 a.m.; USA vs. Spain, 10:30 a.m.
