HB girls’ golf repeats as Sunset League champion

The Huntington Beach High girls golf team closed out Sunset League play last week with a pair of victories which gave the Oilers their second straight league championship.

On Oct. 14 at SeaCliff Country Club (par 36), Ella Poljak shot a low-score of 38 and took medalist honors as Huntington defeated Edison, 216-239. Poljak also was medalist a day later with a 40 score, as the Oilers downed Fountain Valley, 222-256, at SeaCliff (par 36).

Huntington won its final five matches of the regular season and finished with its best-ever record (9-1) in Sunset League competition.

Last year, the Oilers won their first league title in girls’ golf.

“I am so impressed with this team’s character and the enjoyment they have for being teammates,” Huntington Coach Doug Flint said. “They are a tight group that has continued to improve every match this year. The 2014 championship will not look so lonely on the banner now.”

Flint said his entire team returns in 2016.

“The program is in great shape for the foreseeable future,” he said. “We have two incredible captains, Abby Cahill and Ella Pojak, who have led us all season long.” Our coaching staff has done an incredible job this year.”

Marina took second place in the Sunset League (8-2) and finished the regular season 13-3 overall after defeating host Los Alamitos, 207-216, in a league finale Oct. 14 at Old Ranch Country Club (par 36). The Vikings’ Angela Wu was medalist with a 37 score. Brittney Do shot 40, Zahraa Hijara 41 and Brianna Byerley 42, for the Vikings.

“We had a great year, but lost a couple of close ones which would have given us an undefeated league record,” Marina Coach Jim Morris said. “I am looking forward to the postseason as the girls have been improving steadily over the course of the year.”

Girls’ Volleyball

In Sunset League action Oct. 14, Huntington Beach swept host Fountain Valley, 25-16, 25-12, 25-11. Camryn Sanchez had nine kills, Anna Carroll six kills, and Emmaline Walters 14 digs, as the Oilers, ranked No. 7 in CIF Southern Section Division 1AA, completed the first half of league play alone in first place at 5-0, and improved to 21-4 overall.

The Barons fell to 1-4 in league.

Edison improved to 4-1 in league by downing Newport Harbor in five games, 20-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-17, 15-12.

Hannah Phair had 15 kills, Cassidy Dennison came off the bench and finished with 14 kills, Raina Walencewicz added eight kills (.545 attacking percentage), and Dani Dennison had 29 digs for the Chargers (15-8 overall).

In the other Sunset match, Los Alamitos swept Marina (0-5 in league), 25-11, 25-17 25-17.

Boys’ Water Polo

In a key Sunset League match Oct. 14, Huntington Beach held off Newport Harbor, 12-11, at the Newport pool. Ethan Wojciechowski scored a game-high five goals and Patrick Saunders had four saves for the

Oilers, ranked fifth in CIF-SS Division 1, who improved to 2-0 in league.

In the other two league games at Newport, Marina held off Edison, 13-12, and Fountain Valley fell to Los Alamitos, 12-10.

Joseph Lastelic had three goals and five steals and Alex Papac seven saves and an assist for Marina (1-1 league) in its win over Edison. Alex Nathan scored five goals and had four assists and Conor Halloran 11 saves, and assist and two steals, for the Chargers (0-2 league).

Kyle Reilly had five goals and three assists, Ben Schmiesing four goals, two assists and three steals, and Jake Huynen seven saves for Fountain Valley (0-2 league) in its loss to Los Alamitos (2-0).
