Dodger Stadium has been a second home field for the Chatsworth Chancellors. With Tom Meusborn as head coach, the Chancellors are 8-7 in City Section finals, and they’re going to get another opportunity to play at Dodger Stadium on Saturday at 1 p.m.
They can order their bus to Chavez Ravine after a 2-0 Division I semifinal victory over Cleveland on Tuesday at USC.
Catcher Daniel Zakosek was the star. He had three hits and threw out a runner at second to complete an important double play.
“He was tremendous,” Meusborn said.
Josh Garcia threw 5 1/3 innings and Tommy Palomera came in to get the save. Neither team played particularly well but the Chancellors executed enough on defense to avenge a loss to Cleveland in last year’s semifinals.
“It means a lot, especially after losing to them last year,” said second baseman Andrew Renteria, who had two hits despite still trying to recover from being sick over the past two weeks.
Asked what’s different this season, Renteria said, “We’re tougher. It sucks losing. We wanted to get better.”
Chatsworth scored a run in the first inning on a passed ball following a walk and added another run in the sixth on a bases loaded walk. Palomera was in the bullpen warming up in the first, second, third, fifth and sixth innings before Meusborn finally called him in.
Cleveland picked up just three hits on the day.
Chatsworth is expected to use Ryan Roche on the mound in Saturday’s final. The junior is 10-0 this season.
“I’ve been ready for this all year,” Roche said.
