Boys’ basketball: Coach Derrick Taylor faces his old Taft team on Thursday

Derrick Taylor, the basketball coach at St. John Bosco, better make sure he knows which side of the court to sit on come Thursday when Taft faces St. John Bosco in a 7 p.m. quarterfinal game of the Westchester tournament.
Taylor, a Taft grad and former Toreador coach, gets to face his former team for the first time since he left after the 2011 season. He was the Toreadors’ JV coach, then became head coach in 2000 and spent 11 years turning the program into a powerhouse with three City Section championships.
“They’re good,” he said. “I root for them all the time, but unfortunately, not tomorrow. They’re my second favorite program.”
Taft (4-1) is off to a good start this season behind guards Darius Henderson and Damian Wilson.
St. John Bosco (4-1) is led by Vance Jackson and Rodney Henderson.
“It’s kind of a weird deal,” Taylor said. “I changed from red and gold to blue and gold.”
