Down by 10 points in the third quarter, Fairfax picked up its defensive intensity, started creating turnovers with a trapping defense and rallied for a 63-62 win over Sylmar on Monday in the Huntington Park tournament at Roybal.
Sylmar (8-7) received a three-pointer from Dion Bright with 1:17 left to tie the Lions, 60-60. Then Olisaemeka Nwachie made a 15-footer with 49 seconds left for a two-point lead. Lindsey Drew added a free throw with 27 seconds left.
Sylmar had a chance to tie, but a three-point attempt by Bright with two seconds left went in and out. A basket by Malcolm Wadlow at the buzzer made it a one-point margin.
Chance Cole led Sylmar with 18 points. Nwachie and Drew each had 13 points for Fairfax (8-3). Drew’s three-pointer at the buzzer to end the third quarter helped start the momentum for Fairfax.
In a Marmonte League game, Royal defeated Agoura, 58-50. Nick Brandon made 13 of 14 free throws and finished with 25 points.
