Cross country: Freshmen Anthony Stone, Tyriq Granillo create excitement for Loyola, Cathedral

The start of the cross country season is always exciting to see which new runners might make an impact.

For Loyola and Cathedral, two freshmen showed at last week’s Rosemead Invitational that they will be heard from over the next four seasons.

Anthony Stone of Loyola set a freshman record at the meet with a time of 14:50.5. He finished seventh overall in the sweepstakes competition. Tyriq Granillo of Cathedral also would have set a freshman record if Stone had not run faster. Granillo’s time was 15:08.8. He was in 13th place.

Both have been running cross country at the youth level. The two teams finished one-two and both train on the hills around Chavez Ravine.

Loyola Coach Lalo Diaz expects Stone to become one of the top runners in Southern California by his senior year. And watch out for Granillo, too.
