Football: Quincy Bennett returns, and Westlake is suddenly a lot better

Westlake Village Westlake seemed headed for oblivion not long ago. The Warriors had lost to La Serna, were 2-2 and not expected to win any big games in the Marmonte League.
Suddenly, Westlake is 4-2, routed St. Bonaventure, 31-17, in its Marmonte opener on Thursday night and now the Warriors could be ready to put together a six-game winning streak.
Credit the return of junior linebacker Quincy Bennett for giving Westlake a big lift. A year ago, Bennett started the season opener, then broke a bone in his foot. He didn’t return until last week against Crespi, when he made a brief appearance. But on Thursday, Bennett was finally able to team with junior linebacker Reno Dubreuil, and Westlake’s defense was totally different.
“It’s something we’ve been excited about for a long time,” Coach Jim Benkert said of pairing Bennett with Dubreuil. “Those two guys at inside linebacker did a phenomenal job.”
Westlake is in ideal position to win the Marmonte East Division, then play in the Marmonte League championship game in week 10. That’s how important Thursday’s victory was over the Seraphs.
