Chris Carpenter and Cardinals finalize $21-million, two-year deal

Chris Carpenter, 36, signed a $21-million, two-year contract with the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.
“We believe with him and Adam Wainwright we do have that 1-2 punch that we were so hopeful for this year and are glad it can be something we look forward to for 2012 and ‘13,” General Manager John Mozeliak said.
Josh Beckett to start for Red Sox
Boston Red Sox right-hander Josh Beckett, who sat out one start because of a sprained right ankle, will start Thursday or Friday against the Tampa Bay Rays, Manager Terry Francona said.
Red Sox’s Bobby Jenks suffers pulmonary embolism
Red Sox reliever Bobby Jenks was diagnosed with a small pulmonary embolism and was prescribed medication to alleviate the problem, Francona said.
Jenks has been on the disabled list since early July, originally because of back tightness.
Marlins release Mike Cameron
Outfielder Mike Cameron, 38, was released by the Florida Marlins for conduct detrimental to the team. The team would not elaborate.
After being acquired by the Marlins from the Red Sox in July for a player to be named, Cameron played in 44 games and batted .239 with six home runs and 18 runs batted in.
Yankees donating money to disaster relief
The New York Yankees are donating $125,000 to disaster relief efforts.
The team said it was contributing $100,000 to help victims of Hurricane Irene. The money will be split between the Salvation Army and Red Cross.
And $25,000 will will go to those affected by the Texas wildfires.
