Angels’ Kole Calhoun makes it to New York

NEW YORK -- Two hours before Sunday’s game against the New York Yankees, Angels reserve outfielder Kole Calhoun, called up from triple-A Salt Lake to replace reliever Jordan Walden on the roster, stood in a hallway outside the Angels clubhouse wearing slacks, a V-neck shirt and a sports coat.

“You gonna hit in that?” Manager Mike Scioscia asked.

Scioscia wasn’t necessarily kidding. During an all-night travel odyssey that took him from Reno to Phoenix to Philadelphia to Newark and a $108-cab ride to the stadium, Calhoun’s equipment bag was lost.

“My bats, glove, spikes, equipment, all my clothes and underwear are in Phoenix, and I think they’re getting re-routed to Detroit,” Calhoun said, referring to the next stop on the Angels’ seven-game trip. “I hope the team has some stuff I can use.”

Within half an hour, Calhoun, in his second big-league stint, was dressed for batting practice. Since there are no left-handed outfielders on the team, he borrowed a glove from pitcher C.J. Wilson. Though he hardly slept all night, he wasn’t complaining.

“I’m stoked,” Calhoun said. “This is the place to be, man.”
