UCLA football coaches reap benefits of Pac-12 television deal

The trickle down from the Pac-12Conference’s new television deal is already being felt at UCLA, which has invested heavily in its football staff.

Head Coach Jim Mora received a five-year, $11.235-million deal when he was hired in December. Former coach Rick Neuheisel received a five-year, $6.25-million contract in 2008.

Athletic department officials expect UCLA to take in $17.6 million this year from television contracts, multimedia rights and apparel sales. The Pac-12 has a $3-billion television deal with Fox and ESPN.

Mora could make another $750,000 per season in performance bonuses and a total of $700,000 over the life of his contract in retention bonuses. Also included in the contract are the use of two cars, a country club membership and a low-interest home loan.

Mora will earn $1.835 million this season and will receive a $100,000 retention bonus in January if he remains the Bruins’ coach. Mora will be paid a base salary of $2.2 million in 2013, $2.3 million in 2014, $2.4 million in 2015 and $2.5 million in 2016.

Athletic department officials upped the ante for assistant coaches as well, with a payroll of $2.08 million, a significant bump from $1.645 million last season.

Defensive coordinator Lou Spanos has a two-year, $1.1-million deal. Offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone will receive $350,000 this season and $375,000 in 2013.

Special-teams coach Jeff Ulbrich also received a two-year deal, which will pay him $215,000 in 2012 and $225,000 in 2013.

The rest of the assistants are on one-year contracts that include performance clauses. Offensive line coach Adrian Klemm makes a base salary of $275,000; defensive backs coach Demetrice Martin $215,000; running backs coach Steve Broussard $175,000; defensive line coach Angus McClure $165,000; wide receivers coach Eric Yarber $125,000, and Y-back coach Marques Tuiasosopo $100,000.
