Former USC player among those to receive U.S. Open wild-card spots

Maria Sanchez, a 23-year-old former USC player from Modesto, and 20-year-old Nicole Gibbs of Santa Monica, who won her second NCAA singles title at Stanford this year before turning pro this summer, are among those awarded wild-card spots in the U.S. Open on Wednesday.
Also receiving a wild-card invitation from the United States Tennis Assn. was Vania King, who formerly lived in Long Beach but is now a resident of Boynton Beach, Fla.
The U.S. Open is set to run from Aug. 26 through Sept. 9.
Among those who received wild-card spots in the U.S. Open qualifying tournament are Brianna Morgan, a 19-year-old from Beverly Hills and a freshman at Florida, and 17-year-old Taylor Townsend, who became the first U.S. player in 30 years to hold the year-end No. 1 junior ranking at the end of 2012.
