MLB Draft 2013: Phil Bickford, Dominic Smith taken 10th and 11th

Two Southern California high school prospects, pitcher Phil Bickford of Westlake Village Oaks Christian and first baseman Dominic Smith of Gardena Serra, were selected No. 10 and No. 11, respectively, on Thursday during the MLB draft for first-year players.

Bickford, the No. 1 high school pitcher in Southern California, was taken by the Toronto Blue Jays.

The left-handed hitting Smith was chosen by the New York Mets.

Shortstop J.P. Crawford of Lakewood was chosen No. 16 by the Philadelphia Phillies. He’s the cousin of Dodger outfielder Carl Crawford.

Bickford was 12-1 with an 0.83 earned-run aveage and finished his high school career by striking out 18 in the Southern Section Division 4 championship game.

Smith hit seven home runs in leading Serra to the Division 3 championship.

For the Mets to take a player from Los Angeles as their first pick will bring back memories of Darryl Strawberry, the No. 1 pick overall in the 1980 draft out of Crenshaw High.

Cal State Fullerton pitcher Michael Lorenzen was selected No. 38 by the Cincinnati Reds.

The Astros made UC Irvine pitcher Andrew Thurman the first pick of the second round.

Santa Ana Mater Dei High third baseman Ryan McMahon went to the Rockies at No. 42.
