U.S. Open: Roger Federer, John Isner easy winners

NEW YORK — Roger Federer, owner of 17 Grand Slam titles, the most in history, opened his U.S. Open on Tuesday with a sloppy win over Grega Zemlja 6-3, 6-2, 7-5. Federer had originally been scheduled to play Monday night but rain postponed the match.
Two American men also made it into the second round.
The 6-foot-9 John Isner and Sam Querrey, who used to live in Thousand Oaks, both moved on. Isner, seeded 13th, beat Filippo Volandri 6-0, 6-2, 6-3 and made it look easy. Querrey, the 26th seed, struggled before downing Guido Pella 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Federer, seeded only seventh, his lowest since 2002, had 12 aces and 35 winners and seemed more willing to approach the net. Zemlja was no gimme. The 62nd-ranked Zemlja from Slovenia had reached the third round of Wimbledon this year.
