Former USC cornerback Josh Shaw could be difficult NFL evaluation

Former USC cornerback Josh Shaw could be difficult to evaluate for NFL teams preparing for this year’s draft.

Shaw was suspended for 10 games after he lied to university officials about how he suffered ankle injuries in August. He played in the Trojans’ final three games.

NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock said that if “that horrible incident” was disregarded and Shaw was graded for his football skills, that he could be a fourth- or fifth-round pick.

But Mayock said he was “not sure” in which round the 6-foot-1, 200-pound Shaw might be chosen because of the incident.

“He’s a long press corner,” Mayock said this week during a teleconference with reporters. “I think he is not as good in off coverage, he’s got tight hips. But when you line him up and play press, he competes.”

Shaw started 14 games as a junior and intercepted four passes, returning one for a touchdown.

Shaw played in the East-West Shrine game and the Senior Bowl, which helped his cause, Mayock said. He was invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, which began Wednesday in Indianapolis.
