California: Quiet Mondays at Oceanside mission let you unplug, unwind

Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside, the largest of California’s 21 missions, is offering a sanctuary from life’s frenzy during its new Quiet Monday retreats.
Visitors to Mission San Luis Rey are encouraged to meditate, write in a journal, read a book or simply take a nap during a day in which they are unplugged from the outside world. On request, the Franciscan friars will provide spiritual direction.
Franciscans have operated the “king of the Missions” since its founding in 1798.
The $25 fee includes a private room and a box lunch. Guests can also enjoy the mission’s private gardens. Quiet Monday runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Monday offering is not available every week, so participants need to pre-register online or by calling (760) 757-3659.
Longer retreats incorporating overnight stays are also available.
The mission has an interpretive museum that’s open daily. Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for seniors (65 and older) and youths (ages 6-18).
