Musicfest 2008
A Southwest winter musical festival brings 13 concerts during a five-week stretch to venues in northern Scottsdale and Carefree. Pianist André Watts, a guest star, will perform Beethoven’s 4th Piano Concerto; the Musicfest Chorus will perform Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Requiem; and guest artists will include Time for Three, the John Pizzarelli Quartet and the Ying Quartet.

CALIFORNIA
San Francisco Ballet 75th Anniversary Season
A yearlong celebration of the troupe’s 75th year includes a New Works Festival by 10 top choreographers (April 22 to May 6); featured performances by companies from around the world; a U.S. tour (which stops in Costa Mesa from Nov. 11 to 16); an exhibition of the troupe’s historic “firsts” (such as the first U.S. production of “Swan Lake” in 1940) at San Francisco International Airport (through May); and exhibitions at the Museum of Performance & Design with topics including the history of dance in California. The season opens with a black-tie gala Jan. 23 featuring a dinner at City Hall, a performance and a post-performance party.

Napa Valley Mustard Festival
The annual celebration of wine, food, art and music turns 15 this year. Mustard Magic is the opener Feb. 2, with displays of fine artwork and gourmet fare and wines at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in St. Helena. Among other highlights: gallery open houses during a Weekend of Fine Art on Feb. 9 and 10; Le Grand Dîner on Feb. 22, a seven-course dinner prepared by seven notable regional chefs; the Marketplace on March 15 and 16, with celebrity-chef cooking demonstrations, juried fine arts and crafts and live jazz, classical and other tunes; and the Mumm Napa Photo Finish on March 29, with wine and food tastings and an exhibit of photography.

HAWAII
Hilo Chinese New Year Festival
The new year is inaugurated next month with “An Evening of Chinese Culture” at the Palace Theater in downtown Hilo on the Big Island. Dance, including the Shaolin Arts Lion Dancers, music and fashion will be on display. The lion dancers will offer a blessing on Haili Street in front of the theater to open the festivities at 7 p.m. The next day, a community festival will be held at the Kress Building, near Kalakaua Park downtown. Firecrackers will begin popping at 10 a.m., and tents will be packed with Asian arts, crafts, products and food.
When, where: Feb. 15 and 16
Cost: The Palace Theater event is $12, ages 16 and younger free; the community fest is free.

OREGON
Portland Jazz Festival
Midnight jam sessions and a Signature Series tribute to alto sax legend Ornette Coleman are among highlights of the 10-day musical party. Many facets of the genre are covered, with performers including Cecil Taylor, Joshua Redman, the Classical Jazz Quartet and the Spanish Harlem Orchestra.
