Track and field: Newport Harbor’s Ethan Cochran leads in boys’ discus

Ethan Cochran, a junior from Newport Harbor, easily advanced to the championship round of the state track meet in the boys’ discus after a throw of 186 feet 8 inches in the preliminary round that was the best of the day Friday at Clovis Buchanan High.

Also advancing from the Southern Section were San Gorgonio’s Ryan Hunter-Simms (183-10), Loyola’s Nick Budincich (182-09), Dos Pueblos’ Nicholas Scarvelis (181-02), El Toro’s Jake Fraser (177-02), Esperanza’s Mason Miller (173-09) and Ridgecrest Burroughs’ Jayson Kovar (173-00).
