Campy Remains an MVP: Most Valuable Person
- Share via
I want to thank Bob Oates and Marsha Traeger for the superb story and pictures of a man who epitomizes “the quality of courage,” Roy Campanella. As a young boy growing up in Brooklyn, my grandfather and father would take me to Ebbets Field to watch my idol, Campy, throw out runners attempting to steal.
Years later, I moved to Los Angeles and became an administrator with court schools. One night I saw Roy Campanella in a Woodland Hills restaurant. Several days later I wrote the wheelchair-bound Campanella a letter asking if would visit our school and share some of his experience, strength and hope with our incarcerated youngsters.
Campy didn’t need a second invitation. He visited two of our schools and, as far as our students and staff were concerned, Campy became the most valuable player for the fourth time.
