Garfield High School in East Los Angeles is one of 19 high schools nationwide chosen to take part in a summer program to improve literacy, the Atlantic Richfield Foundation announced. Four teachers and more than a dozen other Garfield staff members will attempt to raise the studying ability, reading vocabulary and writing skills of about 270 ninth-graders who are to enter the high school in September. The project will be financed by a $50,000, one-year grant from the Carnegie Grants Program for High School Improvement, which is funded by the foundation.
