A 70-year-old Rancho Bernardo woman was killed Wednesday night when her car crossed the center divider on Interstate 15 and was struck by a truck traveling in the opposite direction, the California Highway Patrol said.
The victim, identified as Stella Marie Vail, had been traveling north on I-15 when her car veered across three northbound lanes, crashed through the 50-foot-wide bush barrier, then crossed three southbound lanes before being broadsided by a tractor-trailer truck. The accident occurred about one mile south of Carmel Mountain Road, a Highway Patrol spokeswoman said. Vail was taken by Life Flight helicopter to Scripps Memorial Hospital-La Jolla, where she died.
The driver of the truck, 46-year-old David Howard of Pinon Hills, Calif., suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
