Bomb Is Found at Iowa State’s Stadium

A bomb was discovered in the seats of Cyclone Stadium following Iowa State’s football game against Kansas State at Ames, Iowa, but authorities removed the device and detonated it without injury, police said.

The 7-inch by 3-inch can-like device included a timing system consisting of a battery-operated digital alarm clock, said Police Capt. John Cable. The bomb was found about 80 minutes after the game ended at 4:05 p.m. Saturday.

The bomb was taken from the stadium and detonated outside the city. Police said fragments will be examined by the state crime lab.

The bomb was found in the east stands where students usually sit, Cable said. No one claimed responsibility for it and there were no warning notes or telephone calls, police said.

Police would not speculate whether the bomb was related to the firing of ISU football Coach Jim Criner last week or the NCAA investigation into alleged rule violations in the football and basketball programs.
