COLLEGE BASKETBALL REGIONAL HIGHLIGHTS : No. 17 Kentucky States Its Case

John Pelphrey’s performance against No. 21 Louisville Saturday night was simply a continuation of the shooting exhibition the Kentucky senior put on during pregame warm-ups.
Pelphrey, a forward, made six of his first seven shots, which helped No. 17 Kentucky take an early 10-point lead en route to a 103-89 victory over Louisville at Lexington, Ky.
“(Teammate) Chris Harrison told me during warm-ups that I was making too many three-pointers,” said Pelphrey, who made four three-point shots in the game and finished with 26 points. “That’s a freshman for you.”
Jamal Mashburn scored 25 points and Dale Brown had 16 for Kentucky (8-2).
Greg Minor led Louisville (6-1) with 18 points.
MIDWEST
Askia Jones scored 25 points and had 12 rebounds as Kansas State (5-3) beat Southern Mississippi, 79-68, in the BMA Holiday Classic at Kansas City, Mo. Clarence Weatherspoon led Southern Mississippi (4-6) with 18 points. . . . Keir Rogers scored 22 points and Loyola of Chicago (5-2) pulled away in the final two minutes for an 87-79 victory over Purdue (7-3) at Rosemont, Ill.
SOUTH
Bryant Stith scored 24 points and Virginia (4-3) held Old Dominion without a field goal for more than seven minutes during an 83-67 victory in the Times-Dispatch tournament at Richmond, Va. . . . Wesley Person scored 29 points and had 11 rebounds to lead Auburn (6-3) to a 104-92 victory over Eastern Kentucky (5-5) in the first round of the Dr. Pepper Classic at Chattanooga, Tenn.
Litterial Green, benched for being late to morning practice, scored 30 points and led a second-half rally that gave Georgia (7-2) a 105-90 victory over Tennessee Tech (2-7) at Athens, Ga.
SOUTHWEST
Will Scott scored 18 points to lead New Mexico (6-5) to a 63-55 victory over Miami, Ohio (7-3) for the championship of the Lobo Invitational tournament at Albuquerque, N.M. . . . Prince Stewart scored 21 points, including 10 during a 16-0 second-half run, as Texas El Paso (7-1) defeated Northern Iowa (3-4), 90-56, in the Sun Carnival tournament at El Paso.
WEST
Stevin Smith scored 19 points as Arizona State (8-3) beat Northwestern, 81-62, for the championship of the ASU-Tribune tournament at Tempe, Ariz. Cedric Neloms scored 22 points for Northwestern (5-4). . . . Brian Hendrick scored 23 of his 30 points in the second half as California (4-4) held off San Jose State (1-7) for a 93-87 victory at San Jose.
J.R. Rider scored 20 points and had seven rebounds and seven assists as Nevada Las Vegas (7-2) defeated Nevada, 93-72, at Las Vegas. Kevin Soares led Nevada (4-5) with 16 points. . . . Chad Scott scored 23 points to lead Oregon State 97-4) to a 92-80 victory over Minnesota (8-4) in the championship game of the Far West Classic at Portland, Ore.
