COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Freshmen Lead Way for UC Irvine Women

Four UC Irvine freshmen accounted for 47 points as the Anteaters defeated Lafayette, 81-54, Saturday at the Bren Center in a nonconference women’s basketball game.
Freshmen Cher Scanlon and Michele Kahler, coming off the bench, each scored 13 points. Forward Jinelle Williams added 12 points and reserve center Beth Beers had nine.
Sophomore guard Karie Yoshioka led UC Irvine (4-5) with 16 points.
In another nonconference women’s game:
Cal State Dominguez Hills 58, Chapman 57--The Panthers lost an 18-point lead in the final 12 minutes, ending a seven-game winning streak over the host Toros dating to the 1987-88 season.
Dominguez Hills (5-6) took the lead for good when sophomore guard Karee Bonde hit a three-pointer with 43 seconds left, giving the Toros a 56-53 advantage.
Julie King led the Panthers with 14 points.
In the Grand Canyon men’s tournament:
Cal State Dominguez Hills 66, Chapman 50--The Panthers made seven of 18 (38.9%) first-half shots and trailed, 33-19, at the half of the third-place game. Guard Mike Vaughn had 14 points for Chapman (5-6).
