Weapons of the Spirit (KCET Sunday at 10 p.m.). A different kind of Holocaust documentary, this 1987 release is a thorough and heartwarming probe by Pierre Sauvage of how his birthplace, a small Christian village, steeped in a Huguenot tradition in south-central France, came to give refuge to 5,000 Jews--including the filmmaker and his parents--during World War II.
New York, New York (Cinemax Thursday at 9 a.m.) Martin Scorsese’s ambitious 1977 self-described film noir musical stars Robert De Niro as a harshly aggressive but gifted saxophonist who marries a band singer (Liza Minnelli) who helps him to prominence only to eclipse him.
Oblomov (Bravo Thursday at 6 p.m., Friday at 12:30 a.m.) Nikita Mikhalkov’s warm and sensuous 1981 film of Ivan Goncharov’s classic half-comic novel takes us into a sumptuously evoked life of the privileged in the late 1850s in which the hero Oblomov (Oleg Tabakov), although chained by indolence and almost terminal ennui, emerges as a universal, deeply moving figure.
Desert Hearts (Bravo Saturday at 7 p.m.) Donna Deitch’s wry and poignant 1985 study of a chic Easterner (Helen Shaver) who comes to Reno in the ‘50s for a divorce only unexpectedly to fall in love with a woman (Patricia Charbonneau).
