Canada Jobless Rate at 11.2%: With 1.54 million workers unemployed in May, the level was the highest in nearly eight years, the government said. The rate was up from 11% in April. Analysts said it will continue to rise and cut into consumer spending as the economy only slowly recovers from recession. Despite rising layoffs, overall employment grew by 31,000 to 12.2 million in May as more people entered the labor force. But the growth was almost entirely in part-time jobs. Analysts said the unemployment rate could rise to as high as 11.5% before dropping as companies work to increase productivity with a stable or smaller work force.
