BREA : School Boundaries Altered to Cut Costs
- Share via
Brea-Olinda Unified School District officials are making small boundary changes in an effort to cut transportation expenses in the 1992-93 budget.
The change approved Monday night would affect students in an area bounded by Oak Street on the west, Almond Drive on the north, Olive Place on the east and Willow Street on the south.
The 25 children who live in the area and currently attend grades kindergarten through sixth are bused to Fanning Elementary School at 650 N. Apricot St., said Assistant Supt. Gary Goff. All new enrollees from the area will now attend Laurel Elementary School, at 200 S. Flower Ave., within walking distance in the newly drawn enrollment zone.
Children currently enrolled at Fanning will be allowed to continue their education there. However, parents will be responsible for their children’s transportation to Fanning since the district plans to eliminate bus service to the area, Goff said.
“We want to put these kids back in their residential school,” Goff said.
Children from the area began attending Fanning eight years ago in an effort to balance enrollment among the district’s six elementary schools, Goff said.
There will be no savings estimate for the change until all the bus routes are set for the 1992-93 academic year.
The Brea-Olinda Unified School District is currently planning to begin charging parents an annual fee of $100 for first the student and $75 for each additional student for children who take the school bus next year.
