New Twist in UPI Deal: New York lawyer Leon Charney has dropped the idea of working with a Dutch foundation to invest $7 million in United Press International as part of his rescue plan for the news agency, a UPI executive said. “We will not deal with the Dutch,” UPI Executive Editor Steve Geimann quoted Charney as telling UPI reporters during a session in the wire service’s newsroom. The National Postal Lottery, a charitable foundation based in Amsterdam that raises funds through lottery sales, had said it was interested in UPI but Charney had been unable to get a written confirmation from the foundation of their investment in the rescue, Geimann said. Charney also faces a rival bid from Middle East Broadcasting Center Ltd.
