Sam Wyche is taking it one step at a time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and carrying Vinny Testaverde right along with him.

The Buccaneers improved to 2-0 for the first time in 12 years Sunday by defeating the Green Bay Packers, 31-3.

Testaverde, the former Heisman Trophy winner from Miami, surpassed Doug Williams as the Buccaneers’ career passing leader by completing 22 of 25 attempts for 363 yards and two touchdowns.

Testaverde also scored on a two-yard run, hitting Adrian White at the goal line and spiking the ball in the safety’s face after forcing his way into the end zone.

“We’ve played a complete game, but that doesn’t mean we’re a complete team yet,” said Wyche, who’s reshaped the Buccaneers’ roster in his first season as coach and instilled confidence in Testaverde to run his no-huddle offense.

Testaverde was questionable to play after developing a case of flu and an inner ear infection that affected his balance on Friday.

He completed his first nine passes and beat the Packers repeatedly with clutch plays, including completions of 40 yards to Mark Carrier, 41 yards to Lawrence Dawsey and 49 yards to Courtney Hawkins.

“I got out there early and felt woozy but kept on playing,” Testaverde said. “By halftime, I felt good and knew I could continue.”

The Buccaneer defense played well for the second consecutive week, limiting the Packers (0-2) to Chris Jacke’s 33-yard field goal and 215 yards of total offense.

The Buccaneers forced three turnovers and made six sacks.

Cornerback Ricky Reynolds scored the Buccaneers’ first touchdown when he stripped the ball from Harry Sydney after a reception, picked up the fumble and ran 15 yards for the touchdown.

Darrell Fullington intercepted a pass by Dan Majkowski and returned it 16 yards to the Packers’ 19 to set up the next touchdown, which came on an eight-yard pass from Testaverde to Carrier.

Carrier had seven receptions for 115 yards. Dawsey caught five passes for 107 yards and Willie Drewrey caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Testaverde.
