Benburb Wins as a 32-1 Shot : Horse racing: He defeats A.P. Indy and Alydeed at Woodbine, combining with 50-1 shot for a $523.50 exacta.

TORONTO — Benburb, a 32-1 longshot despite a victory in July’s Prince of Wales Stakes, took the lead with less than 200 yards to go to win the Molson Million on Sunday.

The race on turf at Woodbine Racetrack had been billed as a three-way battle among A.P. Indy, Alydeed and Technology.

Benburb covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:51 3/5 and finished a half-length in front of Elated Guy, a 50-1 shot. Vying Victor, another longshot, finished third.

A.P. Indy, off for three months because of a sore hoof after winning the Belmont, was seeking his seventh consecutive victory but looked sluggish and finished fifth.

“He wasn’t confident at all,” jockey Eddie Delahoussaye said. “He just didn’t finish at all.”

Alydeed, the beaten favorite in the Prince of Wales Stakes, held the lead for the first mile, but faded in the stretch.

Benburb was ridden by Richard Dos Ramos, a last-minute substitute for the injured Larry Attard.

Technology was fourth, with Alydeed finishing sixth and Steady Rise seventh.

Benburb paid $65.50, $15.90 and $7.70. Elated Guy paid $20.70 and $10.70 and Vying Victor paid $11.00. The Benburb-Elated Guy exacta paid $523.50.
