THOUSAND OAKS : Cal Lutheran Plans Astronomy Lectures

The director of Los Angeles’ Griffith Observatory will give two lectures on astronomy next Monday at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks.

Edwin C. Krupp will give a speech at 10 a.m. titled “Archeoastronomy and the Roots of Science,” which will explore the ceremonial and symbolic aspects of the sky in ancient and prehistoric civilizations.

An 8 p.m. lecture that same day will be titled “The Cosmic Mountain” and will discuss the sky’s influence on sacred traditions.

Krupp received his master’s and doctorate from UCLA’s department of astronomy and has written several books on the ties between astronomy and ancient belief systems.

The lectures, free to the public, are sponsored by Cal Lutheran’s Harold Stoner Clark Endowment. The endowment, according to a university description, funds annual lecture series “that combine a philosophical sense of wonder with scientific research.”

No reservations are required for the lectures. The 10 a.m. lecture will be held in Cal Lutheran’s auditorium and the 8 p.m. lecture will be held in the university’s Preus-Brandt Forum.
