JUNIOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL / BOWLS ROUNDUP : Palomar Gets Victory and Title, by George

Matt George kicked a 21-yard field goal with two seconds left to give top-ranked Palomar a 27-25 victory over second-ranked City College of San Francisco Saturday in the Community College Bowl at San Francisco in a game that decided the national junior college championship.

A capacity crowd of 4,500 at San Francisco’s stadium watched as the Comets took possession at the 50 with 1:02 left. Quarterback Tom Luginbill used seven plays to drive them to the Ram four. Then, on third and goal, George, a All-American and the top-scoring kicker in the state with 89 points, gave the Comets (11-0) their 19th consecutive victory.

Palomar led, 24-7 in the third quarter, but San Francisco (10-1) used a 31-yard interception return by Reggie Rusk and two touchdown passes by Eric Gray to take a 25-24 lead.

Luginbill, the first junior college quarterback to pass for more than 6,000 yards (6,787) in a career, completed 29 of 46 passes for 340 yards and two touchdowns.

San Bernardino 38, Bakersfield 21--Bob Bees threw four touchdown passes, including three to wide receiver Damon Wilkins, as the Indians upset the third-ranked Renegades (10-1) in the Shrine Potato Bowl before 10,929 at Bakersfield Memorial Stadium.

Bees, who completed 11 of 17 passes for 167 yards, threw scoring passes of 32, 15 and 12 yards to Wilkins to help San Bernardino (10-1) build a 31-7 halftime lead.

Mt. San Antonio 45, Citrus 17--It was a case of too much Leonard Green as the Mounties won the Southern California Bowl at Citrus College.

Green led the state in all-purpose running with 2,136 yards and scoring with 162 points on 27 touchdowns. Against Citrus, he rushed for 205 yards in 18 carries and scored four touchdowns to lead the Mounties (9-2).

Quarterback Curtis Robinson gained 127 yards in 20 carries and scored twice for the Owls (8-3).

Riverside 35, Cerritos 24--Keyna Smith rushed for a game-high 148 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Tigers (7-4) won their seventh in a row in the Orange County I Bowl at Orange Coast College.

Riverside led, 21-0, after the first quarter, but the Falcons (7-3-1) took a 24-21 lead on a 33-yard field goal by Chad Weaver with 10:28 left. Smith then scored on a five-yard run with 8:56 left.
