Costa Mesa, Sr.
Football / Running back
Tran, Costa Mesa’s ultra-dependable running back, continued his impressive run through the playoffs Friday, rushing for 309 yards and three touchdowns in a career-high 49 carries in the Mustangs’ 35-7 victory over San Marino in the Division VIII title game. Tran, who has rushed this season for 2,243 yards, putting him third on the Orange County single-season list, scored on runs of one, one and 50 yards. Tran was again his sure-handed self; he has fumbled once in two years as the Mustangs’ primary back--in the fourth game last year.
* Mike Flores, Savanna, returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown and an interception 45 yards for another score in a 20-0 victory over Valencia.
* Tim Lin, Los Alamitos, led his team to the Sunbird tournament title, averaging 26.7 points and 6.7 three-pointers in the final three games.
* Miles Simon, Mater Dei, had 33 points, including nine three-pointers, in a 77-46 victory over Newport Harbor to win the Daily Pilot tournament.
* Miguel Valencia, Santa Ana, was named MVP of the lower weights after helping his team to the El Toro wrestling tournament title.
