Coach: David McLeish (10th year).
1992-93: 16-6-5, 8-4-2 in the Sunset League; failed to make playoffs for second time in McLeish’s tenure at Marina.
Key returners: Mike Harris, Sr., fullback; Dan Judkins, Sr., midfielder, first-team All-Southern Section and Sunset League; Jose Monroy, Sr., forward, first team all-league and second-team all-section, led Marina in goals (13) and assists (six); Nate Newton, Sr., forward; Shawn Sjomeling, Sr., midfielder-fullback.
Key newcomers: Joe Borzoni, Jr., midfielder; Tony Laitinan, Jr., defender.
Outlook: Eight starters are back from a team that finished strong last year, defeating playoff teams Ocean View, Santa Ana and Huntington Beach in the second round of last season’s Sunset League schedule. By season’s end, Marina was ranked sixth in Division I. “We lost to Huntington Beach on penalty kicks in a game that would have put us in the playoffs,” McLeish said. “That left everybody really hungry for this season. Defensively, we’ll be strong and we have midfielders that can control the game and forwards that can finish.”
