NEW YORK — President Clinton’s approval rating has improved while trust in House Republicans and approval of Speaker Newt Gingrich’s performance have dropped, according to a CBS News-New York Times poll.
Clinton’s approval rating of 51%, announced Thursday, is his highest in the poll since February 1994. Thirty-eight percent said they disapproved and 11% did not know or did not answer.
Only 29% approved of Gingrich’s job performance, down from 34% in October. And only 26% approved of how Congress is handling its job.
When asked which party they most trusted to balance the budget, the public was evenly divided, with 41% trusting the Republicans in Congress and 41% trusting Clinton. Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole had a 52% job approval rating, but Clinton leads Dole, 52% to 38%, in a test of how respondents would vote for president if the election were held now.
