Flotation Device Ban at Wedge Begins Today

A group of body surfers known as the Wedge Preservation Society will observe the start of a prohibition of flotation devices by hoisting their “blackball” flag today, then organizing a beach cleanup.

“We’ll be raising our flag at 10 a.m.,” said Mel Thoman, a society spokesman and body surfer. “We’re doing this because the restriction goes into effect from May 1 to Oct. 31.”

The ban was enacted by the City Council in 1993 after complaints of heated arguments at the Wedge between body surfers and people who rely on flotation devices such as Boogie and knee boards.

Newport Beach lifeguard Lt. Jim Turner said the restriction is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. During those hours at the Wedge, no one with any flotation device can surf the area.

The Wedge, at the tip of the Balboa Peninsula, produces some of California’s premier waves, known for their steep drop and high speed.

It has become a Southern California attraction, often drawing dozens of body and knee boarders into the water in fierce competition for a ride.

Today’s beach cleanup will begin at noon. Thoman said Wedge “blackball” T-shirts will be provided free to those who help out.

Turner said that Newport Beach will also begin its restriction today against surfboards between 40th to 44th streets.

However, those with Boogie boards and similar devices will be allowed there from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., he said.
