The Orange County chapter of the NAACP will present its sixth annual “Juneteenth Celebration” June 15 at Lillie King Park in Santa Ana.
The free public event will include a baking contest, musical entertainment, raffles, games and an arts and crafts display. The event commemorates the arrival of news of the Emancipation Proclamation during the Civil War, organizers said.
Juneteenth--June 19--originated in Texas and is a state holiday there. Though President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in September 1862, word did not reach Texas until June 1865, according to the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People.
Though all slaves were not freed initially, the proclamation led to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which ended slavery in the United States, in 1865.
The celebration will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the park, 500 W. Alton Ave. Information: (714) 262-7868.
