Re “College District Reformer Tells Why He Left,” Dec. 24:
With some astonishment, I learned that recently resigned L.A. Community College District Chancellor Bill Segura was a “reformer.”
What exactly was he trying to reform? Certainly not the district’s budget issues. Whatever recent financial difficulties the district faced occurred under his watch. Certainly not board of trustees-administrative-faculty-staff relations nor, according to his reported comments, the bureaucracy that made it “difficult to enact change.” Clearly, being unable to effect any changes in those areas negates his role as “reformer.”
His justification that he tends “to be impatient” may explain his many absences from the district, his consistently abrupt leaving in the middle of public board meetings, and his not attending district-wide or campus meetings to which he was invited. I will make no comment about the horse he keeps in Austin, Tex., but his short 16-month tenure was not spent “reforming” the Los Angeles Community College District.
