Bush’s Decision on Stem Cell Research

President Bush’s decision to limit public investment in embryonic stem cell research is nothing less than tragic (Aug. 10). As a society, we must use all the weapons in our arsenal to combat debilitating and, in many cases, lethal diseases. Unfortunately, as in the cases of abortion rights and public funding of faith-based organizations, Bush has shown a propensity for endowing public policy with his own personal religious convictions. It seems that the notion of a “separation of church and state” does not exist with this administration.

Those who are protesting embryonic stem cell research must now avoid being hypocrites. If a family member has a medical condition that can be alleviated or even cured through the use of treatments directly related to stem cell research, they must reject those treatments.

I have discovered a solution for most of the world’s ills, from Middle East violence to the abortion and stem cell research controversies. I am now looking for a way to administer my cure. If everyone left their religion at home, the world would be a much better place.
