A top opposition leader critical of President Pervez Musharraf for his 1999 coup was convicted of trying to incite an army rebellion and sentenced to 23 years in prison, Pakistan’s public prosecutor said.
Javed Hashmi, head of the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy, was convicted of sedition, mutiny and forgery by a court in Rawalpindi, said Munir Ahmed Bhatti. He was fined $730.
The trial was held in prison, and reporters weren’t allowed to cover it. Opposition senators walked out of parliament in protest. “This is murder of justice,” said Sen. Ishaq Dar.
