Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. said it would begin talks with the Port of Los Angeles, the busiest in the U.S., about building a new rail terminal that might cut delays in handling cargo such as Asian imports.
The terminal would eliminate as many as 1 million truck trips a year by moving freight from docks directly to rail tracks linked to Chicago, Dallas and other major cities, Burlington Northern said. The Fort Worth-based company said the new terminal might add as many as 1,000 jobs.
The company’s shares fell 13 cents to $46.80 on the NYSE.
