Federal agents arrested 10 people Wednesday for allegedly taking part in a ring that stole tax refund checks from a mail processing center in Los Angeles and cashed them at banks and stores around Southern California.
The approximately 6,700 checks, totaling about $18 million, were stolen by a former postal worker at a South Los Angeles processing center between early 2000 and December 2003. Checks were cashed by people using false identification with help from employees at banks and stores throughout the region, authorities said.
