Luggage left on a downtown sidewalk prompted a temporary street closure outside the Los Angeles Times building late Monday morning.
The Los Angeles Police Department determined that the luggage posed no threat around 11:43 a.m., and the streets were reopened.
The unattended object was reported to police at 10:29 a.m. Monday, prompting the closures of 1st and 2nd streets from Broadway to Spring Street, according to Officer Norma Eisenman of the Los Angeles Police Department.
Officers cordoned off the area with yellow crime scene tape and blocked streets while bomb squad personnel examined the object.
Eisenman said the heavy police presence was in response to the weekend bombings in New York City and New Jersey. On Monday, police arrested Ahmad Khan Rahami, a suspect in the bombings, in Linden, N.J.
Also Monday, police in Fullerton evacuated homes near the 3000 block of North Euclid Street after a “pipe-like device” was found in the area.
A robot from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s bomb squad inspected the device, which was rendered safe at 12:28 p.m. The device, which appeared to be a plumbing pipe, did not contain explosives.
